Finally, October is here, and all things pumpkin spice have arrived!  Oklahoma is a four seasons state, unfortunately my favorite season just happens to be the one that never lasts long enough.  Oh, how I love fall!  The leaves start to change colors, the air is cool and crisp, and life becomes a cozier place.  We grab our favorite hoodie, wrap a scarf around our neck, and take a hayride snuggled up in a warm fuzzy blanket while sipping on some hot apple cider. Yes, fall is my favorite season of all!  Now if I could just get Oklahoma weather to cooperate.  As I head out the door in the morning a nice cool breeze kisses my neck.  By noon I’m sweating with the AC on, regretting my fall wardrobe choices.

But I don’t care what the weather man says, I am manifesting all things fall.  I will continue to wear my long sleeve shirts, and I will display my pumpkins proudly on m front porch!  I have also carried this enthusiasm with me to work.  I have pumpkins and cornstalk ready to welcome you in!  But I’m not the only one that’s manifesting all things Fall.  My neighbors at the Deer Creek Mercantile are having a Fall Open House this Saturday from 10 to 5.  They will have giveaways, new arrivals and soup tasting!

So, if you’re like me and you want to get a jumpstart on fall festivities, come on down to the cozy little town of Deer Creek.  Take a step back in time and slow down for a bit.   Stop by the Mercantile and enjoy some southern hospitality and grab a couple of her Frontier Soup mixes while you’re at it.  Once you’re done shopping at the Merc, make sure you stop by our Farm Store and grab some of our grass-fed and pasture-raised meat to add to your soup.  We’ve got grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, lamb, and pork!

If this Oklahoma heat still has your brain set on summer, then grab some of our delicious grass-fed beef patties and a package of brats, we won’t judge you.  But if you’re like me, you’ll set your sights on stew meat and roasts.  We have several different cuts of roasts to choose from such as Pike’s Peak, Arm, Rump, and Chuck.  Now, if you really feel like living on the wild side, grab one of our Bachman Family Farms hoodies and a bag of cocoa.  Summer may not have fully given up its grip, but FALL IS COMING!  So, I say it’s better to be prepared.

Last but not least, if you’re really feeling the Fall spirit, head over to Rustic Roots Pumpkin Patch in Lamont.  It’s a 15-minute drive from our Farm Store and they have endless activities and beautiful photo props!  They have kiddie train rides, pumpkins galore, and host a variety of events!  This is a venue that the whole family can enjoy.  Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head on over to Kat’s Steak House in Lamont.  The steaks are the best around, and don’t get me started on her onion rings!  Make sure you call ahead and make a reservation because this place fills up fast!  Grab your friends and family and make a day trip and enjoy some of these hidden gems in our community.  Happy Fall Y’all!

Regenerative Agriculture, Series 2 / Keep the Soil Covered

Ultimately, covered soil equals healthy soil. When you promote healthy soil, you are promoting nutrient availability, reduced erosion, and sequestered carbon. The main idea behind keeping the soil surface covered is to protect the nutritive abilities of the upper layer of soil. Covering the soil reduces water erosion which can be destructive to natural ecosystems within the soil.

Regenerative Agriculture, Series 1: Minimize Soil Disturbance

Regenerative Agriculture. What is it, and why is everyone talking about it? In this first series, we will learn about the first principle in Regenerative Agriculture: "Minimize Soil Disturbance."
